HOW TO STAY PRODUCTIVE ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Updated: Mar 12, 2021

This is an article “How to Stay Productive on Social Media” by Marc Primo Warren

Social media can work both ways. For many, it is still the best way to gather news and information about everything-- from friends to the community. For others, it can be a tool to promote polarisms, political agendas, or even fake news. While today’s internet generations are undeniably facing a social media dilemma in terms of weighing its pros and cons, one thing is for sure-- each one of us wants to be productive.

While face-to-face meetings and interactions are still the preferred way for the majority, the crisis that COVID-19 has brought the entire world paved the way for teleconferencing and a boost on social media usage. More people are now spending more time on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter showing an 8% increase in April year on year.

With today’s estimated 3.81 billion users, social media offers a lot of great opportunities for anyone to stay productive and in touch with the world.

Communicate in real-time

The main objective of social media is to keep people connected. This October, Facebook will be enforcing new terms of use that it says will keep people more in touch with friends and family rather than focus on other aspects of the platform. This, even though the terms carry more restrictions on content and information that may put the platform on a legal or regulatory quagmire.

However, social media still serves its purpose of allowing you to communicate with friends, family and colleagues in real-time which can definitely make you more productive. Messenger Rooms are good call and video meeting platforms for work or simple catch-ups, while Instagram Stories let you in on what the people you are following are up to lately.

Even if you are working from home or stuck in quarantine, social media is the best and most available tool you can use to keep communication lines open with the people around you.

Join a network

Businesses are also thriving on social media with data insights available for the biggest platforms around. Whether you’re looking for a push in sales or want to promote your skills for career advancement, these platforms are where specialized communities are born.

Try to join social media groups that can help you develop your know-how or keep you abreast of what’s happening in your industry. More specific groups on various fields are chatting about it on Reddit or Pinterest, so you may want to check them out too.

Create a business

For those who have some spare time on their hands and want to showcase their DIY products or self-honed skills online, social media platforms like Facebook or Instagram will allow you to create business pages where you can display your brand profile, manage content, and grow your business.

60% of Instagram users discover new products on the platform while Facebook gives you the opportunity to reach nearly two billion users daily with your ads worldwide.

On the other hand, Twitter also allows you to create your own business page on the platform complete with profile and header photos, display name and account name, brand bio, and pinned tweets which can be news or promotions that your followers can focus on. Today, 75% of privately owned B2B businesses are active on Twitter with 40% of users saying they have purchased items on the platform.

Be a positive force

With social media’s evolution continuing at a rapid pace, more tools and features are expected to come up soon via the biggest platforms and there’s no doubt about how social media can help anyone stay productive even during these challenging times.

But as stated earlier, social media can be a two-edged sword and it’s up to you how you use it to your advantage. Just bear in mind that the most successful brands and personalities keep what’s beneficial to their followers on the top of their minds at all costs. This simply means that staying productive is equal to reaching out to others who are online and may be in need of your help.
